Haarlem boasts 22 courtyards with almshouses. They are a reminder of days gone by. The were funed by wealthy citizens for poor unmarried women and widows who could live in these little houses around a landscaped inner courtyard for free. These city garden almshouses are still havens of tranquillity. Most of them, like the Almhouse Bakenesse founded in 1395, are open to the public (closed on Sundays).

Kennemer Dunes & Beach

The Zuid-Kennemerland National Park stretches from Zandvoort to IJmuiden. The ever-surprising dune area, from estates along the outer edge, through wild dunes to the North Sea beach, is the habitat of countless special animals and plants. Wonderful for walking and cycling.
