Courtyards/Hofjes of Haarlem
With 22 courtyards, Haarlem is truly a city of courtyards. The courtyards are a reminder of times long past. Wealthy citizens founded the courtyards, small houses around an inner garden, for poor unmarried women and widows, where they could live for free.
These courtyards are still small city oases with charming houses, often behind heavy doors and hidden gates.
Most are open to the public, including the Hofje van Bakeness, the oldest courtyard in Haarlem from 1395. All courtyards are closed on Sundays.
